Everyone has the occassional need to send Anonymous mail.  You may even want the person to be able to reply to the anon. mail.   I am NOT an expert on remailers, but I do know a couple of neat tricks I will be glad to share with you.  If these little tips pique your interest, go to the PGP Users Mailing List Page for links to FAQs and technical info about remailers.

Sending Anonymous Email

To send an anonymous message, address the TO: box in your e-mail program to one of the following Remailers.  There are many more remailers than these.

[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]

Fill in the subject line any way you like, keep in mind though, some remailers remove the subject line.  The remailer at replay.com does not pass the subject line along.
In the body of the message, place two colons (::) side-by side on the first line, all the way to the left. YOU MUST PUT THE DOUBLE COLON ON THE VERY FIRST LINE, ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT FOR THIS TO
WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On the very next line, type in the phrase (this is who you want the mail to go to):

Request-Remailing-To: [email protected]

- Capitalization is important - BE SURE TO TYPE THE ABOVE EXACTLY!
- Be sure that you put a hyphen between the words, as shown.
- Be sure to put a colon after the word "To:"
- Be sure to leave a space after the colon before entering a e-mail address
- Now, skip a line and start typing your message that you want the person to receive. You can also attach a file, if your e-mailer will allow it.
- Your message body should look like this:

::
Request-Remailing-To: [email protected]

(This is where the message goes)

THAT'S IT! Send the message!

Receiving E-Mail Without the Sender Knowing Who They Are Sending To

The following tips assume that you have PGP installed and have a general working knowledge of the program's use

If you want to send anonymous email to someone, but want them to be able to reply to you, you need to setup an encrypted reply block.  What is that, you ask?  Basically, you encrypt your email address and put it into your anonymous email, along with instructions for using the reply block.
The concept is simple: You will be encrypting your own e-mail address with a remailers public key. You will then attach this ENCRYPTED REPLY BLOCK to the bottom of the message you are sending, with instructions for the recipient to send the block, and any additional message they want to add, to the remailer. When the remailer receives this encrypted reply block, they will decrypt the message and since the first line in the message is a properly formatted request to remail the message to you - they will do just that!

First, you need to get the Public Key of the remailer you want to use.  Here is the key for the remailer at replay.com:

-----BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-----
Version: PGP Cyber-Knights Templar build 5.5.3ckt

-----END PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK-----

- Copy the key above into the clipboard (highlight the key and press Ctrl-C), then open up PGP Keys and select Edit | Paste to paste the key into your keyring

Now, we need to create the encrypted reply block.

- Open Windows Notepad
- Type in a properly formatted request remailing header to yourself.  If I were doing this to my email address [email protected], it would look like this:

::
Request-Remailing-To: [email protected]

- highlight the text, copy it to the clipboard (Ctrl-C)
- right-click the little PGP icon in your start bar (it looks like a little lock) and choose Encrypt Clipboard
- use the key from above to encrypt the file with.  The key should be this one:

Replay Remailer Service [email protected]

- Go back to Notepad, and click on File | New to create a new document
- Now, hit Ctrl-V to paste the encrypted text into Notepad
- You have just created your own Encrypted Reply Block (called an ERB)!
- I suggest that you save this as a TXT document for all future use.

Now that you have an encrypted reply block (ERB), you need to create instructions for the recipient to follow so that the message actually makes it back to you! I suggest that you put your instructions in the same file that you saved your ERB in. Then, you can use this file as a Signature File in your e-mail program! If you use this method, any e-mail you send will include all of the necessary information for the receipient to respond back to you - and you'll remain anonymous! Here is a set of sample instructions.

--------------------------------------------------------------
The above message was sent to you through an anonymous remailer, therefore, you can not reply using the "reply to" feature of your e-mailer. If you'd like to send a reply to me, please follow these instructions EXACTLY.

The unreadable text at the bottom of this email is actually my e-mail address, which has been encrypted (scrambled) using a program called PGP.  The remailer which you will address this message to has the "key" to decrypt (unscramble) my email address, then forward the message on to me.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Open a NEW e-mail message (do not use the "reply to" feature)
2. Address the message to: [email protected]
3. Make the subject anything you like
4. Copy (highlight, then press CTRL+C) everything from the :: (double colon) at the bottom of this email all the way through and including the dashed line underneath -----END PGP MESSAGE-----
5. Paste(CTRL+V)this encrypted reply block into the body of the new message you just opened.
6. The :: (double colon) MUST BE ON THE FIRST LINE, ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT in the message body. If it isn't, this message won't make it to me.
7. Type your reply below the dashed line underneath -----END PGP MESSAGE-----
8. Be sure to include your e-mail address in your message, or I won't know who this message came from.

(copy everything below this sentence, not including this sentence)
::
Encrypted: PGP

{Remove this sentence and replace it with your Encrypted Reply Block,
ensuring that there is (1) one blank line between the -----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE----- and
the phrase Encrypted: PGP}

Use the example below as a guide of what the entire message body you will be sending to the remailer will look like when you're finished. Notice that the message WILL include an encrypted reply block. Also, remember that this message will be addressed to: [email protected]
